In the spirit of all things green Caitydid Clothing is incredibly excited about St. Louis’ newest organic foods endeavor! The Old North Grocery Co-Op, located in the historic Old North Neighborhood, is now open and serving the urban community a local and organic shopping option.
The Co-Op located at 2718 N. 13th St., offers nutritious and locally grown food – some of which is literally grown at the doorsteps of the neighborhood via the Old North community garden!
This exciting addition to St. Louis is a great sign of progressive urban expansion. Many urban communities have been lacking nutritious shopping options after the 1960/1970′s suburban expansion. As the white middle class migrated away from the city, so went the supermarkets. To this day this has left the ethnic population with few options for providing food for their families. Fast food and corner convienence stores have been the only options. A recent study by the Center For Food and Justice found that low income African American communities had 3 times less the supermarket availability that white middle class communities did.
The good news is that the importance of healthy living is catching on to urban planners and legislation alike. The Old North Grocery Co-Op is what we hope will become a continuing trend in St. Louis. Memberships are available for purchase, which allows a 10% discount and discount member days, for a one time household fee of $80.
